When should you start training your
puppy?
The answer is right away, but you want to implement different
techniques at different stages. This depends really on your dog's
temperament, maturity level and breed.
Puppy potty training should start the minute
you
bring your new furry friend home. That is something that cannot wait or
else bad habits start to develop. This can easily be done by crate
training or even going down the puppy training pads route, which ever
you like best.
More advanced training skills such as
socialization, leash training and others can easily wait until your
puppy is 2 – 3 months old. You will know he is ready for this
type of training if you can call his name and have him respond by
dropping what he is doing and come to you.
Raising a puppy is almost like raising a
child.
Your little pup will have a very short attention span so don't expect
to be able to spend hours a day training your puppy because it just
wont happen. Training will need to be done in short 5-10 minute spurts.
Keep your eye on the look out for training opportunities as they arise.
You certainly want to raise a well behaved
and
confident dog who is able to protect your home and family yet be gentle
to welcomed visitors. Around 12 weeks old you can start training your
puppy how to do things on command such as stay, sit, come and down.
It only takes about 10 – 20
minutes a day to
train a puppy. It is not a complicated or time consuming task. It can
also be quite fun.
Practice makes perfect, your dog will not be
trained after the first lesson. Keep at it and you and your dog will be
happier and closer. If you want any help make sure to check out Dog
Train Academy,
they are an online based dog training academy that costs less than a
pizza. You can really make a huge difference in your training by using
them.
