I know what
you are probably thinking, 'I don't want to put my puppy in a cage!'
Let me tell you, a crate is not a cage and it will actually do your
puppy a lot of good, let me tell you why.
Puppy crate training is
as good or as bad
as you make of it. You can turn it into a positive learning experience
that will be enjoyable for you both. It really is the easiest and
quickest way to get your puppy potty trained.
First of all, the dog crate is not a time
out and
should never be used to punish your puppy. Your furry friend should see
his or her crate as a safe and comfortable den. Once you understand
this, you will be able to use this as the cornerstone of your puppy
crate training plan.
A great way to introduce your puppy to his
crate
is by giving him a special treat only when he is inside of it. Before
too long your puppy will start associating the crate and the treat with
each other. Remember to use repetition. Your puppy will catch on much
faster if you can show him what you want him to do over and over for a
while.
So why does a crate work so well? It is
because
your puppy has a natural urge to keep his den clean. Especially if you
have taught your dog to love his den, he will never want to mess it up
with urine or stool.
Using this tendency to your advantage you
can
leave your puppy in the crate and only take him out to eat, go potty
and play. Don't worry, this isn't forever, it is only until your puppy
crate training is successful and your puppy is officially house
trained.
Puppies usually go potty at certain times of
the
day. This is right when he wakes up each morning, shortly after eating,
after waking up for a nice nap or right before bed. Taking the puppy
outside to go use the restroom is a surefire way to make sure you
eliminate 'accidents' from happening in your home.
Make sure to never leave your puppy in the
crate
for too long. Three to four hours at a time is the maximum amount of
time he should be in there. Let your puppy explore and have fun outside
of his crate throughout the day and show plenty of affection.
